Land Claim

The Natoaganeg 1844 Act Specific Land Claim

Natoaganeg First Nation has filed a Specific Land Claim against Canada over the unlawful loss of 1,116 acres of reserve lands during the colonial settlement period. Despite the Crown’s duty to protect Indigenous lands, it failed to prevent or remove squatters and later sold the lands in 1847 without consent or compensation. The claim, submitted in 2017, alleges breaches of the Crown’s legal and fiduciary obligations to Natoaganeg between the 1790s and 1840s.

Since January, 2022, Canada and Natoaganeg been involved in active negotiations for the settlement of the claim. The overall goal of the settlement of the claim is to provide the community with financial compensation for the loss that they suffered through the loss of their lands.
